100 selections of Japanese terraced paddy fields

>> Japan's 31 most beautiful places [CNN]

Terraced paddy fields are rice fields that have been made on the sides of hills. Ini Tanada was only terraced paddy field from Hiroshima Prefecture to be selected as one of “100 selections of Japanese terraced paddy fields” by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on July 26, 1999. Events, such as old-fashioned rice planting, are held regularly at these rice fields, which provide an opportunity to hand down the old traditional methods of farming to the younger generation. The Ini Tanada rice field is characterized by the way the water used for irrigating the field is extracted. As water is drawn to the rice fields directly from mountain valleys via a waterway, only clean natural water is used to grow rice. Rice grown in such optimum condition is named Ini Tanada-mai and is very popular for its great taste. Also, Ini Tanada, where original Japanese scenery is preserved, attracts a lot of photographers every year as the best photo spots.( Rice fields were created by cultivating mountains and piling excavated stones on top of each other. The oldest stonewall in Ini is estimated to have been built about 500 years ago (late Muromachi Period).Number of terraced rice paddies: 324 )
